Katherine Doe Morse is a mezzo soprano celebrated for her warm lush voice, her fearless performances, and her eclectic catalogue of repertoire, ranging from the traditional to the avant-garde to the forgotten. She has garnered attention for her masterful musicality, and for bringing a haunting intensity to her performances.
Audiences have heard Katy at venues such as Isaac Stern Auditorium at Carnegie Hall, Bruno Walter Auditorium at Lincoln Center, Marc Scorca Hall at National Opera Center, National Sawdust, Roulette, Bard College’s Fisher Center, George Frey Center for the Arts, and Kupferberg Center for the Arts. The 2023 season saw Katy’s European debut in Die Zauberflöte with Lyric Opera Studio Weimar. Since Spring 2022 she has sung and conducted with the award-winning vocal ensemble C4: The Choral Composer/Conductor Collective. She regularly sings alto in the New York Philharmonic Chorus under Jaap van Zweden and Malcolm J. Merriweather.
A passionate interpreter of standard and off-the-beaten path operatic repertoire, Katy has made appearances as Dame Carruthers in Yeomen of the Guard with Ridgewood Gilbert & Sullivan Opera Company, Sesto and Annio in La clemenza di Tito with New York Opera Forum, Mercedes in Carmen with Regina Opera, the Secretary in The Consul with Encompass New Opera Theater, and Cherubino in Le nozze di Figaro with Sandbox Opera. She has stood in for Ms. Laurie Rubin as Mycelia in Sensorium Ex with VisionIntoArt and as Anne in La ville morte with Greek National Opera. She studied and partially performed the roles of Cendrillon, Mallika, and Ursule at Westchester Summer Vocal Institute and Queens College.
Katy is also an accomplished early music singer; she performed as the alto soloist in Pergolesi’s Stabat Mater at Divine Mercy Parish in Brooklyn, where she regularly sings at their monthly Missa Cantata. She has performed as Arcane in Handel’s rarely-performed opera Teseo with CantantiPROJECT, and was an alto soloist in Bach’s St. John’s Passion with the Rethinking Bach Performer’s Workshop in Japan, where she also performed excerpts in recital from Bach’s St. Matthew’s Passion. She has received additional training at the Baroque Opera Workshop at Queens College, where she recently performed in Purcell's The Fairy Queen.
Katy’s musical abilities have enabled her to sing a variety of traditional and unusual concert repertoire. She has sung as the mezzo soloist in Bernstein’s Symphony No. 1 “Jeremiah” and Songfest, as alto soloist in Mozart’s Requiem with the Queens College Choral Society, and the vocal solos in Feldman’s Rothko Chapel with Raquel Acevedo Klein’s contemporary music project Os Ensemble. She has made several appearances at National Sawdust singing choral works conducted by Klein. She has also sung in the ensemble for such operas as El Condor Pasa: Andean Hope by Dante Valdez with the United Nations Orchestra, Syzmanowski’s King Roger at Bard College, and Alex Weiser’s opera State of the Jews, which saw its workshop premier at Roulette NYC in 2018.
Katy received her Masters in Classical Performance at the Aaron Copland School of Music at Queens College in 2019, where she met and continues to study with Sherry Overholt. She received her Bachelors in Music Education at the Crane School of Music, with concentrations in vocal performance, piano, and choral conducting.
She maintains a private teaching studio online and in Westchester, where she lives with her husband Mike and their cat Simon.
